Overview

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to half of the world’s population of critically endangered mountain gorillas. Gorilla tracking is a popular tourist activity in the park, and it is an amazing opportunity to see these incredible creatures up close.
Ruhija sector
Ruhija sector is located in the eastern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It has 3 gorilla families namely Bitukura, Oruzongo and Kyaguriro family. Only 8 people are allowed to trek a family at a time. Ruhija is also popular for bird watching.
Gorilla facts:
• Mountain gorillas are also known as Gorilla beringei beringei.
• They are the world’s largest primates.
• They have unique nose prints, much like human fingerprints, which can be used to identify individuals.
• A gorilla’s lifespan is between 35 and 40 years.
• Gorillas mostly live in family groups called troops.
• Gorillas sleep in nests that they build on the ground though they can also climb.
• The gestation period of a gorilla lasts between 8-10 months.
• Gorillas are highly intelligent, naturally gentle giants but can be aggressive when attacked.
• A male gorilla can weigh up to 225 kilograms and stand 1.8 meters in height.
• Gorilla babies begin to hang onto their mothers when they are only a few hours old and will continue to do so for the next three years.
